Mike joined the firm as an attorney with a specific focus on ERISA services provided by Qualified Plan Advisors, Prime Capital Investment Advisors’ retirement plan division. Previously, he provided consulting services to retirement plan sponsors as the managing director of an Overland Park based registered investment advisory firm. His retirement plan clients ranged from 15 to 600 participants, with plan assets up to $35 million, including several law firms.
From 2006 to 2013, he served as vice president of one of the nation’s largest record keeping organizations, which provided services to over one million participants and administered $100+ billion in plan assets. His responsibilities included negotiating agreements with mutual fund managers and increasing revenue sharing payments. He helped to establish a process to review each investment on the platform for total cost, as well as the applicable rebate–used to offset administrative expense. As a member of the finance team, he reviewed hundreds of retirement plans ranging in size from $5 million to $20 billion, relative to market price, operational efficiency, profitability and risk.
His experience includes working with retirement plan oversight committees, concerning: fee analysis, fiduciary considerations, plan design choices, process evaluation, regulatory requirements and vendor negotiations. Mike is actively involved with numerous chapters of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), speaking at events across the region.
Mike has practiced law in the Kansas City area for over twenty years. In 2003, he helped close a multi-million dollar sale of a life insurance company and its subsidiary, which was an SEC registered mutual fund manager. He is a member of the Kansas and Missouri Bars and holds a FINRA Series 65 registration. Mike graduated from Kansas State University in 1992 (B.S.) and from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1997 (J.D.).
